Prolapse

Bearded dragon prolapse

Prolapse in bearded dragons happens when part or all of an organ slips out through the cloaca. Organs most commonly affected are the intestine, uterus, and hemipenes.

Symptoms

  • Pink, red, or purple organ tissue protruding from vent

Causes

  • Dehydration
  • Egg laying
  • Egg binding
  • Impaction
  • Trauma during mating

Treatment

Call your vet right away! If action is not taken quickly, the organ can die, which can kill your beardie. En route to the vet, keep your beardie on paper towels and keep the tissue moist with water-soluble KY jelly. Once you arrive, the vet will clean and rehydrate the tissue, then gently push it back in.
